Start building your career with an internship!

These opportunities give you the support network you want — and the real-world experience you need.  An internship at the University of Michigan offers students practical, hands-on experience that bridges academic theory and real-world applications. Under professional guidance, students develop vital skills and clarify career goals. Internships enhance resumes, provide networking opportunities, and improve employability. They are integral to the educational journey, fostering both academic and professional growth, and preparing students for successful careers by merging classroom learning with industry practices.

The University of Michigan has a wide variety of ways for students to get involved in engaged learning, internships are just one of many ways. Explore past and present internship opportunities that are available or that other students have participated in to get an idea of all the different experiences that are waiting for you!

Though we understand this is not a comprehensive list of internships that are currently available or that other students have participate in, we continue to work with the academic units to update this list, continue to check out this space or with your academic advisor to learn more about opportunities within your school or college.

Put theory into practice through Co-ops, Internships, and Research

Internships and Co-Ops are both opportunities for students to apply their knowledge in real world environments. They also provide students the opportunity to become familiar with a potential employer. There are many benefits to an internship or co-op:

  • An opportunity to explore a career
  • An opportunity to network
  • Establishing mentors
  • An introduction to the field’s culture and etiquette
  • Acquiring new skills
  • Getting a real-world perspective on an occupation (How much overtime do employees really work? How much time is spent behind a desk versus in the field?)

School of Information

Did you know that 94% of students say internships made them better prepared for career success?

The Career Development Office coaches students on conducting a successful internship search, engages them throughout the experience and empowers them to see how internships connect to their career goals and professional development.

Practical experience through internships is highly encouraged in all degree programs and required in the MHI program. This form of experience-based learning allows students to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom. Students are able to reflect on the experience while considering how this will impact their future actions. Through internships, students can develop their identities as information professionals.

Benefits:

  • The internship is related to what is taught and researched at UMSI and connects to the student’s coursework and future career goals
  • The internship provides hands-on professional work that helps the student develop new learning, skills and abilities
  • The student has a professional supervisor with three or more years of experience who provides mentoring for a successful internship experience

Real-world learning experiences

Real-world learning experiences are essential to the success of students as emerging professionals in the world of the performing arts, and internships are one avenue towards gaining that experience. The EXCEL Internship Fund provides students grant awards up to $1,000 to offset expenses related to underpaid or underfunded internship experiences. (In extraordinary cases, students may receive awards up to $1,500.)

Each year, UMS and SMTD select students to intern for 5-7 weeks during the summer with a professional dance, theater, or music ensemble that UMS plans to present during its upcoming season. UMS presents ensembles from all over the world, and so students will likely be assigned to intern in major metropolitan or international locations. Students:
